Hyperbole # 34 by Jennifer Wardell

We had coffee and a bagel with cream
cheese. It was enough to fill my belly
so I'm not hungry, but I often dream
of eating something more, eating jelly

and peanut butter sandwiches, deep fried
in batter and hot grease, gobbling them like
a whale eats krill, at one point I had tried
to ask for more food, but like the Third Reich

starved Jews and Gypsies, even so did
the landlord starve us, where does the money
that we pay her go? She spends it on squid
and octopus fried in grease and honey.

I should go out and get breakfast on my
own, and to the starving times say goodbye.
