I think that Josh Weed is making an error in assuming that modesty culture pertains to dressing in a manner that deters sexual provocation. I'm not sure that this is the case. I always understood modesty in dress to be dressing in a way that suitably respects and reflects the dress code and customs pertinent to the situation and atmosphere. A bikini or bathing suit is perfectly modest at the beach or lake or pool, but a bikini would not be modest at a black tie event.

Well if this isn’t so eye opening to the over sexualization of women and rape culture, I don’t know what is. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔

  • Erin Sherwood Your comment is kind of what he's talking about though. Like...we all know you shouldnt wear a bikini to your friends wedding. Thats just dumb on so many more levels than what this conversation is, and actually kind of feeds into that mindset. You're making an extreme example to explain away a very important point that modesty culture can be twisted in a way to easily hurt women. That post is not advocating for people to wear underwear at black tie events, it's explaining that you can't blame someone for your inability to contol your own inpulses.

    • Kenneth Larot Yamat there is this new cactus one that I really like, and a new flag design. i bought a breast cancer fundraiser set of stamps. paid an extra 5 or 10 cents per stamp. see. i'm not a woman hater.
    • Erin Sherwood Thats awesome, and I never wanted to imply that you were one. But your example was one of a woman wearing a bikini at a black tie event...which I dont believe a problem, or something that even happens. But does imply that women would be the ones dressing "inappropriately" to a lesser extent.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat alright, a guy should not wear Folsom Street Parade gear to an event requiring formal attire. or vice versa, to be fair.

  • Kenneth Larot Yamat Erin Sherwood My point is that modesty culture isn't a culture, it's merely a concept, and the concept is that attire should be appropriate for the circumstances, the meme author is injecting sexuality into the concept, and I don't think that is fair. Forget the example. It's a shit example. What I'm trying to say is that Josh Weed is inserting an inappropriate assumption into the concept of modesty.

    • Erin Sherwood But isn't any concept a theory of what should be?
    • Erin Sherwood And isn't sexuality a concept as we've construcred what it "should" be.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat i agree that modesty is a concept is a theory of what should be. and i agree that sexuality is a concept, but i'm not sure if sexuality is a concept of what should or shouldn't be
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat i think that sexual mores or whatever is a concept of what should or shouldn't be sexually.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat but i think sexuality is something else.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat i think i saw you a few times at whole foods in downtown san jose.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat like a zillion years ago.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat i mentioned on the post that i shared this from that i agree that a woman's worth is not determined by her sexiness or what she wears or whatever.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat and Josh Weed says something like, in the string that he never tells another man what to wear. but men tell other men what to wear all the time and it is not sex related. Josh Weed is a total Freudian, and he may or may nor realize it. everything is cock and cunt with this guy.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat anyway, there is these scene in Donnie Brosco, where Al Pacino's character tells Johnny Depp's character: Dress like I dress, lose the mustache. or something to that effect. it's totally normal for guys to do that. it's normal for people to make clothing suggestions to other people, and it doesn't always have to be sexual.
    • Erin Sherwood Again, thats exactly what this guy is talking about. Giving people style tips isnt the same as regulating how they dress based on your inability to control your sexual response.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat We have two strings going on here simultaneously.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat The point I made in the second string is that I don't think that Josh Weed can conceptualize things as being non-sex related, and the point that I've repeatedly tried to make is that modesty culture has nothing to do with sex. modesty has to do with being modest as opposed to being ostentatious or bodacious or extravagant, or risque. modesty is about not calling attention to yourself through your attire.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat and i was using the style tips as a parallel to what modesty is in relation to attire suggestions.
    • Kenneth Larot Yamat The point I made in the other string is that Josh Weed is clearly a Freudian or something, I'm not sure he can understand modesty culture, and I have no idea what modesty culture is. he uses quotation marks which suggests that the concept is made up or brand new. if it were capitalized it would be something more established. anyway. Freudian impose a sexual framework to everything they look at, analyze and critique. I don't think that everything is always sex related.

  • Kenneth Larot Yamat Here is why Josh Weed has to be Freudian, or Psycho-Sexual in his viewpoint, he starts off by stating his sexuality and the sexual norms of the society he grew up in. He's viewpoint of the world is from a sexual framework. I view the world from a moral and cultural relativist frame work. I look at customs and practices and say: whatever? I guess that's the way they do things?
  • Kenneth Larot Yamat Erin Sherwood I want to make sure that I'm not taking the side of modesty as a concept, or modesty as a culture, i'm simply trying to say that i'm not sure modesty as a concept or modesty as a culture has it's basis or foundation or premise or whatever, as sex based. i think that modesty is just a style or clothing.
